Description

The Legato is an asym evolution of the Beach Cruiser Mark III. The BCmkIII has become something of a catch-all for me personally as my style & approach to longboarding has evolved and as has been my "go-to" (or most ridden) longboard for the past few years. Ever since developing the Thresher, my asym performance shortboard, many years ago, I've been wanting to develop an asymmetrical longboard shape with a similar premise to make the board feel, react & surf more symmetrical through asymmetry, correcting for the natural advantages and disadvantages on our frontsides vs. backsides of the human body standing and moving sideways. However, rather than from a high performance aspect, this time to enhance fluidity, smoothness & control in a board meant to be walked & surfed from nose-to-tail.

The visual shift in the Legato's outline, forward on our backside and backward on our frontside, is designed around the natural shifted position our bodies take when standing sideways in our stance, regular or goofy, and your Legato will of course be shaped accordingly for your stance. We don't stand perfectly 90 degrees sideways and have varying degrees between our feet, hips and shoulders. The asymmetrical shape of the Legato takes that shift, our stance and the pros & cons of frontside vs. backside surfing into account to ultimately rebalance those pros & cons to feel less drastic and more balanced. The result is a more effortless & connected surfing longboard.

FRONTSIDE: The wider thumbtail, narrower nose and widepoint back utilize the superior leverage & finesse we have on our frontsides, putting more control in our hands & feet as we generally have more control when surfing frontside. The flow-through nose concave also gives us more speed and less brake as we tend to have more control over our speed as well for noseriding. The narrower nose handles steeper sections more naturally, while the wider tail profile enables us to use our frontside leverage for a springier turning experience.

BACKSIDE: The narrower pintail, wider nose and widepoint forward account for the power we have on our backside but the inherently lower finesse & agility - along with the spoon shaped nose concave creating more brake for us - keeps the board in the pocket of the wave for noseriding more automatically and helps prevent the board from running away from the pocket. The pintail also enables easier turn initiation while the wider nose profile is more inviting & confidence inspiring for the more challenging backside noseriding.

"Legato" is an Italian word that means “tied together”. In music, it means to connect notes smoothly, as if they are “tied” together, where notes flow into each other without gaps, creating a fluid melody.

And that's exactly how my Legato longboard was designed to surf & feel. Smoother, more fluid & connected.
